It serves as the stage for the Cultural Heritage Department of the National University of Colombia and is the institution's main auditorium. With a seating capacity of 1,619, it is recognized as one of the top acoustic venues in Latin America.
The building was designed by architect Eugenia Mantilla de Cardoso, who received the National Architecture Award in 1974. It was declared a National Monument in 1996 and has been the usual venue for the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra, which has performed there for over 50 years. This stage has earned two Latin Grammy Awards: "Best Instrumental Album 40 years" in 2008, and a recognition for sound engineering awarded to Rafa Sardina for the CD "50 Años Tocando Para Ti" (50 Years Playing for You) in 2018.
The auditorium has conquered new audiences by hosting large concerts featuring famous artists like Plácido Domingo, Kraken, and Aterciopelados, among others. In November 2023, it was reopened following significant restoration and modernization efforts, supported by the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra and the Secretariat of Culture, Recreation, and Sports (SCRD) of the Bogotá Mayor's Office.
