Basilica Sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate

It is an impressive place that attracts the faithful and tourists in search of spiritual peace and a panoramic view of the city from the top of the hill. This sanctuary houses the images of the Fallen Lord, a figure of the “Santo Cristo Caído a los azotes y clavado en la cruz” (Holy Christ Fallen to the scourging and nailed to the cross) by the master Pedro de Lugo Albarracín and a replica of the Virgin of Montserrat, just like the one in the Monastery of Montserrat in Barcelona, Spain, an image that is accompanied by the Colombian flag and the flag of Bogota. This last figure was restored in 1996 by the monastery from which it gets its name because the original figure disappeared in 1950. 

According to the opinions of visitors, this place is perfect to find recollection, prayer and peace for the spirit, especially during weekends and special times such as Easter and Christmas. The Basilica Sanctuary of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate is located at the top of Monserrate hill, east of the city and has a spectacular panoramic view of Bogota.

The fallen Lord of Monserrate and the place where it is located, holds many mysteries and focuses on the beliefs, rites and miracles that many people attribute to him. Among these stories is that of calming droughts, preventing earthquakes, calming violence, blessing engaged couples and healing the sick among many others, over time he became the patron saint of Bogotanos who every day go up in the different means of transport seeking peace and tranquility to all their problems and above all devoutly praying or giving thanks for the favors received.
