Very close to Bogotá you can go into the depths of the earth, disconnect from the outside world and descend to one of the most emblematic places in Colombia, it is the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. 29 km north of Bogotá you will find one of the most significant architectural and artistic achievements in Colombia.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira, a municipality near Bogotá, is a Catholic religious site, recognized for being the only underground temple in the world: 180 meters underground you will find a setting that invites you to reflect and find yourself. Inside this place you will see a complete artistic collection of works made with salt and marble, imposing figures that have been suitable to complement a space that captivates, year after year, locals and visitors.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira project had a significant contribution from the country's capital. The architectural and artistic design was in charge of the architect Roswell Garavito Pearl, while the engineer Jorge Enrique Castelblanco Reyes, both born in Bogotá, were in charge of the technical and engineering direction. The engineers were selected to direct the work, after 44 more proposals were presented, in a contest called by the Colombian Society of Architects around 1990.
A few years ago a contest was held to choose the wonders of the country and, as you imagine, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira obtained the largest vote, becoming the first wonder of Colombia.
Due to its imposing appearance, the temple has been awarded the title of architectural jewel of modernity; furthermore, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira has obtained great recognition as a cultural, environmental and religious heritage.
As you can see, this spectacular monument is one of the icons of Zipaquira that is worth visiting. You can enter the cathedral from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, so plan your trip from Bogotá in advance. Once there you cannot miss the cultural complex «Salt Park», a thematic cultural space that exalts the geology, the wealth of this mineral, and the country's natural resources.
