In 1807, a devastating fire destroyed the temple and much of the surrounding town. With the arrival of Father Lucas Gómez, construction of the current church began, and the original façade has been preserved. In 1993, a restoration was undertaken to renovate the interior, ensuring that the tradition of faith in the region remains vibrant.

The history of this temple is closely tied to the founding of Villeta in 1551 by Alonso de Olalla and Hernando de Alcocer, who were commissioned by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada.
